BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Queen City's oldest park is shining a little brighter. A lighting project is now complete at Johnson Park.

Old and out-dated lighting fixtures were repaired and several other updates were made in order to increase lighting levels at the park.

Marilyn Rodgers from West Village Renaissance Group said, "It significantly increased the light, reducing crime and other components that are an issue for the area, twice the light we had before. We are now working to acquire grants and donations for the park's rehabilitation. The lighting replacement was able to be done at no cost since the city leases from National Grid and the lease was up for these fixtures. The city had investigated the lease structure and provided a winning solution while also creating a "model" for future lighting throughout the city."

More work will soon get underway at the park. Curbs and sidewalks will be repaired and paths and a running track will be added.

The work is expected to wrap up in 2011.
