DRUM CIRCLE ON JOHNSON PARK - Tues., 9/2/08 and at the Light Party Sun., 9/21/08

Time to experience the heartbeat of community with Johnson Park's first drum circle Tuesday evening, August 26, 2008 at 7:00.

We're also adding two more dates!
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Sunday, September 21, 2008 at The End of Season Johnson Park Light Party from 4:00 - 9:00 pm (Bring a chair, dish to pass and beverage)

The beat of drums is inherent in every culture as it emulates the heartbeat. Let's come together for this evening and celebrate the diversity of our community!

In 1991, during testimony before the United States Senate Special Committee on Aging, Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart stated:

"Typically, people gather to drum in drum "circles" with others from the surrounding community. The drum circle offers equality because there is no head or tail. It includes people of all ages. The main objective is to share rhythm and get in tune with each other and themselves. To form a group consciousness. To entrain and resonate. By entrainment, I mean that a new voice, a collective voice, emerges from the group as they drum together."

Whether you have an instrument or not, it is well worth the experience.

JOHNSON PARK RECIEVES ENHANCED LIGHTING FROM CITY OF BUFFALO

Buffalo park glowing again

Updated: Aug 23, 2008 08:05 PM EDT

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Queen City's oldest park is shining a little brighter. A lighting project is now complete at Johnson Park.

Old and out-dated lighting fixtures were repaired and several other updates were made in order to increase lighting levels at the park.

Marilyn Rodgers from West Village Renaissance Group said, "It significantly increased the light, reducing crime and other components that are an issue for the area, twice the light we had before. We are now working to acquire grants and donations for the park's rehabilitation. The lighting replacement was able to be done at no cost since the city leases from National Grid and the lease was up for these fixtures. The city had investigated the lease structure and provided a winning solution while also creating a "model" for future lighting throughout the city."

More work will soon get underway at the park. Curbs and sidewalks will be repaired and paths and a running track will be added.

The work is expected to wrap up in 2011.
